10.20 – The Courage To Be Honest With Yourself
October 20 — The Courage to Be Honest With Yourself
There are lies we tell other people, and then there are the quieter lies we tell ourselves.
We tell ourselves that we had no choice. That someone else was entirely to blame. That we don’t care about something that, in truth, still hurts us deeply.
Sometimes these stories protect us. They allow us to get through a difficult day without having to confront everything at once. But when we repeat them long enough, they can become the walls of a prison we don’t even recognize.
Socrates believed that a life worth living required examination. Not because we should spend every waking moment criticizing ourselves, but because understanding ourselves demands a willingness to question what we think we know.
And that can be uncomfortable.
It takes courage to admit that we were wrong about someone. That pride cost us a relationship. That fear, rather than wisdom, influenced an important decision.
But there’s something remarkable about that kind of honesty.
The moment we stop defending a false version of ourselves, we no longer have to carry its weight.
We can acknowledge our mistakes without allowing them to define us. We can recognize our weaknesses without surrendering to them.
Perhaps maturity isn’t becoming someone who always knows the right answer.
Perhaps it’s becoming someone who is no longer afraid to ask himself the difficult questions.
Today’s reflection: What is one truth about yourself that you’ve been reluctant to acknowledge — and what might change if you finally did?
